St Peter's Parish Church Tiverton
St Peter’s has a vacancy for an experienced Choir Director and Organist who would be keen to enhance the musical expressions of worship within the Church.
St Peter’s is an historic Grade 1 Listed Church and the Civic Church for the market town of Tiverton, hosting the Remembrance, Mayor’s, Christingle, Nine Lessons and Carols and a number of other services central to the life and customs of the town.
The organ is one of the jewels of the Church. It was dedicated in 1696 and built by Christian Schmidt who also worked on the organ for the rebuilding of St Paul’s in London; it was rebuilt and enlarged in 1867 by Henry Willis, an outstanding organ builder who made his name at the Great Exhibition. The carvings are attributed to Grinling Gibbons. The Parish website (stpeterstiverton.org.uk) contains some photos and a recording of a duet by Samuel Wesley played on the instrument.
The Director of Music would work as part of a team of enthusiastic anddedicated volunteers within St Peter’s, including the adult robed Choir and Assistant Organist. There would also be scope for involvement in other areas, depending on interests and experience; for example liaising with local schools, organisations or musicians, to enrich the musical life of the community more generally.
The hours of work and salary, based on RSCM rates, would be for negotiation. The post requires an Enhanced DBS check.
